FOREWORD Aerial photography is an infallible way to tell a story, to read about the mix of nature and man evolving on a vast area, made of centers of varying sizes, but all witnesses of a great past. The territory of Asti is composed of I I5 municipalities, many of which are perched on hills, sweet in the north. bitter in the south. A land enriched by magnificent landscapes, punctuated by a series of hills covered with neat vineyards, by woods and meadows. An area that offers himself to various readings: the exuberant nature, the history of the villages, the evidence left by urban stratification and the arrangement of communication methods. Worthy of note is the quantity and quality of historic buildings that have come down to us, sometimes after renovation and reinterpretation, but always retaining their characteristics and signs that the crossed ages left. The view from a vantage point, which in this case is the helicopter, permits to analyze and observe many of the details that are' hard to find from the ground, thereby highlighting the variety of present architectural styles and witnessing the passage of cultures and ideas that played the protagonist in this region. In this book we find buildings started out as abbeys that have been converted with the change of political contingencies into strong and fortified structures, redundant with the advent of heavy weapons, and later became noble residences, stili maintaining the charm and the "perfume" of a completely unchanged history. Aerial photography also allows you to observe the characteristics of urban centers, making the developments occurred during the past centuries immediately distinguishable, highlighting the contrasts and, unfortunately, some cases of poor integration between "old" and "new", mainly occurred in the 20th century. Fortunately, during the past decades man started to think about the preservation of this heritage considering the urban and rural area as a resource, a resource that can make a difference. Food and wine tourism has become a reality and the cities, as well as the countryside are almost always neat and well-kept, the vineyards, forests and fields are present in an orderly mosaic of colors forming a painting full of surprises. This document is the result of a series of flights over the areas of Asti. A realization that gives us a lot of satisfaction, considering the limited budget that a totally independent book brings with it and born in a time of crisis. Enthusiasts of flights and of the territory, even before the professionale, have invested time and resources to create this volume, the second in series after the analogue version about the province of Alessandria ("La provincia di ALESSANDRIA, vista dal cielo", 201 I). A book made without burdening public entities, but by investing leisure time and using our skills to deliver to the future generations a work in which an area with many facets and many surprises is documented.
