Una delle biografie fu scritta dal suo intimo amico, il letterato e teorico dell'arte Lodovico Dolce (1508-68). Nel 1557, nel suo L'Aretino o Dialogo della pittura, l'autore afferma che Tiziano, all'epoca in cui lavorava al Fondaco dei Tedeschi, nel 1507, aveva circa vent'anni. Anche un secondo biografo, il pittore e architetto aretino Giorgio Vasari (1511-74), fissava la data di nascita di Tiziano attorno al 1488 o al 1490. Non di meno, a lungo si è creduto che Tiziano fosse nato parecchi anni prima, verso il 1476. E lui stesso infatti, in una lettera al re di Spagna del 1571, a dirsi novantacinquenne, per accelerare verosimilmente alcuni pagamenti che attendeva da tempo. Perciò, quando nel 1576 morì, egli sarebbe stato centenario, o quasi. Anche se, come è più che probabile in base alla cronologia delle opere, fosse nato attorno al 1490, la sua vita e la sua creatività sarebbero state comunque straordinariamente longeve. Come quasi nessun artista prima e dopo di lui, Tiziano in quasi settant'anni di attività riuscì, in modo straordinario e sopeprendente, a rinnovare di continuo e a far evolvere ulteriormente il proprio linguaggio. One of these accounts of his life was written by his dose friend, the writer and art theorist Lodovico Dolce (1508-1568). In 1557, in his book entitled "Dialogue on Painting, or L'Aretino", Dolce writes that Titian was about twenty years old when he was working in the "Fondaco dei Tedeschi" in 1507. A second biographer, the Fiorentine artist, architect and art historian Giorgio Vasari (1511-1574) also gave Titian's date of birth as being in about 1488 or 1490. Despite this, it was for a long time believed that Titian had been born very much earlier, around 1476. The reason is that in a letter written to the king of Spain in 1571, Titian himself claims to be 95 years old. He probably did this, however, to speed up long overdue payments. If it were true, it would mean that he was about a hundred years old when he died in 1576. But even if he was not born until about 1490 - which the chronology of his works shows to be much more likely - he would stili have enjoyed an exceptionally long and creative life. During the course of almost 70 years, Titian succeeded in constantly renewing and developing his art in a way scarcely any other artist has succeeded in doing either before or since. [..]

Eine der Lebensbeschreibungen verdanken wir seinem engen Freund, dem Schriftsteller und Kunsttheoretiker Lodovico Dolce (1508-1568). 1557 gibt er in seinem Buch mit dem Titel »Dialog Ober die Malerei oder L'Aretino« Tizians Alter, zur Zeit seiner Arbeit am »Fondaco dei Tedeschi« im Jahre 1507, mit erwa zwanzig Jahren an. Auch ein zweiter Biograph, der Florentiner Maler und Architekt Giorgio Vasari (1511-1574), setzte Tizians Geburtsdatum um 1488 oder 1490 an. Trotzdem glaubte man lange, Tizian sei wesentlich friiher, um 1476, geboren. Denn er selbst bezeichnet sich 1571 in einem Brief an den spanischen Kfinig als 95-wahrscheinlich, um Zahlungen, auf die er schon lange wartete, zu beschleunigen. Er wke damit, als er 1576 starb, etwa 100 Jahre alt gewesen. Auch wenn er, und dies ist aus Grtinden der Werkchronologie mehr als wahrscheinlich, erst um 1490 geboren wurde, ergibt sich eine auferordentlich lange Lebensspanne und Schaffenszeit. Tizian ist es wie kaum einem Kiinstler vor oder nach ihm gelungen, in fast 70 Jahren seme Kunst immer wieder zu erneuern und weiterzuenrwickeln. [..] |
