Rome – the navel of the world, the Eternal
City the center of Western Christianity:
epithets like these have long been used to
try to define the unique nature of the
Italian capital. Three thousand eventful
years have fashioned the character of this
remarkablе city, creating an historical
synthesis found nowhere else in the world.
In every century the masters of Rome - the
generals and emperors of classical times,
and then popes and princes later - stamped
their own personalities on the city. They
summoned famous architects and artists to
create the buildings, sculptures and paintings that lend the capital the appearance still constitutes its fascination today.
Past and present, the pagan and the
Christiап, art and everyday life – all are
inextricably combined. Again and again
through its long history, the city has given
crucial political and artistic stimulus to the
cultural and intellectual history of Europe.
Latin, the language of the classical empire,
has many modern Western descendants.
The governmental and judicial systems of ancient Rome became the model for a number of modern states and their legal codes. It was in Rome that the imperialist ideas of the Middle Ages originated, molded by Christianity; it was here that papal power established itself in the age of the Renaissance, while the papal court became the center of humanist culture. In classical antiquity and modern times alike, Roman architecture, painting and sculpture have regularly inspired the whole of the Western world. Notwithstanding all the changes the Eternal City has seen, it has preserved an immense variety of art treasures that from time immemorial have attracted and delighted millions of cultured visitors. So great is Rome's magnetic attraction that many who were planning only a short visit have felt impelled to stay on longer, for months or even years. The list of the city's famous visitors is a long one, and many of them have tried to sum up their overwhelming impressions in words. Perhaps the best-known comment was made by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe: "I can say that only in Rome have I understood what a human being really is. I never again reached those heights or knew those joyful sensations; by comparison with what I felt in Rome, I have never really been happy again."

Rom – Nabel der Welt, Ewige Stadt, Zentrum der abendländischen Christenheit, so oder ähnlich lauten die Beinamen, mit denen man die Einzigartigkeit der Kapitale Italiens zu umschreiben versucht. 3000 Jahre Geschichte haben die Stadt bestimmt und Spuren hinterlassen, die eine in der Welt einzigartige Symbiose bilden. In allen Jahrhunderten haben die Herren Roms, ob römische Feldherren und Kaiser oder Päpste und Fürsten, der Stadt ihren persönlichen Stempel aufgedrückt. Sie ließen berühmte Architekten und Künstler herbeirufen, die mit Bauten, Skulpturen und Gemälden der Kapitale jenes Antlitz verliehen, das noch heute ihren Reiz ausmacht. So sind hier Vergangenheit und Gegenwart, Profanes und Christliches, Alltag und Kunst untrennbar verbunden. Immer wieder hat die Stadt im Verlauf ihrer langen Geschichte entscheidende politische und kulturelle Anstöße für die europäische Kultur- und Geistesgeschichte geliefert. Latein, die Sprache des antiken Imperiums, bildet die Grundlage für viele Sprachen des Abendlandes. Das Staats- und das Rechtssystem des alten Rom wurde zum Vorbild vieler neuzeitlicher Staats- und Gesetzeswesen. In Rom hatte die christlich geprägte Reichsidee im Mittelalter ihren Ursprung, die päpstliche Macht festigte sich im Zeitalter der Renaissance und der päpstliche Hof wurde zum Zentrum humanistischer Kultur. Von der römischen Architektur, Malerei und Skulptur sind in der Antike wie in der Neuzeit stets wesentliche Impulse in das ganze Abendland ausgegangen. Unabhängig von all den Metamorphosen, die die Ewige Stadt durchlebt hat, ist ihr eine unermessliche Vielfalt an Kunstschätzen erhalten geblieben, die seit allen Zeiten Millionen von kulturinteressierten Besuchern anlockt und sie zugleich überwältigt. Manch einer, der nur einen kurzen Besuch geplant hatte, ist ob der machtvollen Anziehungskraft der Stadt Monate oder Jahre geblieben. Die Liste der berühmten Gäste ist lang, und viele haben die Flut ihrer Eidrücke in Worte zu fassen versucht. Die bekanntesten stammen wohl von Johann Wolfgang von Goethe: »Ich kann sagen, dass ich nur in Rom empfunden habe, was eigentlich ein Mensch ist. Zu dieser Höhe, zu diesem Glück der Empfindung bin ich später nie wieder gekommen, ich bin, mit meinem Zustand in Rom verglichen, eigentlich nachher nie wieder froh geworden.
