 PREFAZIONESono cresciuto in mezzo a racconti familiari di emigranti. I miei nonni materni, entrambi di famiglia numerosa e povera, avevano lasciato due volte l'Italia nei primi decenni del Novecento per cercare fortuna negli Stati Uniti, prima a New York, poi a Chicago, dove avevano lavorato come operai in grosse sartorie. Non ne erano tornati certamente ricchi, ma intanto, con le rimesse, avevano potuto mantenere agli studi in collegio, consentendo loro di diplomarsi, le loro due figlie, restate in Italia con i loro nonni. Con i risparmi 'americani' avevano poi acquistato una casetta a Fubine, quella in cui io stesso sono nato e che è sempre restata la 'casa di campagna', inalienabile per ragioni affettive, della mia famiglia. Conservo ancora vivissimo il ricordo dei racconti dei miei nonni circa le loro esperienze americane, così come di certe emozioni che alcuni di quei racconti suscitavano in me bambino. [..]  INTRODUCTIONDespite the hardships that drove many of the inhabitants of Fubine, in thc Province of Alessandria, to seek a better life bcyond the sea, the Fubinesi would remain enthralled by thcir village and continue to form a relatively tight-knit group for generations after their departure from their farming-bascd hill town community. In 1848, Fubine, located a few kilometers northwest of Alessandria, had a population of 2,459, which grew to 2,982 by 1861. In 1901, there were 3,853 inhabitants. That number fell to 3,535 a decade later, but swelled again to 3,870 in 1921 before returning to 2,970 by 1931. (Goretta, 92-93) Betwecn 1904 and 1913, 1,337 inhabitants emigrated from Fubinc. The importance of that number becomes clear when we consider that nearby Casale Monferrato, with roughly ten times the population of Fubinc, sent just 3,345 emigrants out into the world during the same period. (Gorreta, 96) Indeed, according to "Statistics of the Italian Emigration for Foreign Countries", Fubinc had the highest emigration of any town in the Monferrato Casalese between 1904-13. In 1921 alone, Fubine lost 546 cmigrants, (Castelli, 42-43) and during the 1920s, a decade when restrictions on both leaving Italy and entering America slowed the flow of immigrants, more than 700 Fubinesi requested passports to emigrate.
