Città maestosa, universalmente nota per le feste, i piaceri, le intense attività intellettuali, i grandi progetti economici, scientifici e turistici, Nizza ha preservato una storia lontana, un'epopea originale, un'identità all'altezza delle sue ambizioni e del suo prestigio. La sua leggenda comincia tra l'ansa delle Ponchettes e il delta del Paillon, in un sito paludoso sotto le scogliere del castello. Ma a dar retta ai paleontologi, il territorio di Nizza fu abitato dall'uomo, come dimostra il sito di Terra Amata, più di cinquecentomila anni fa.

Mais bien avant l'homme civilisé, des habitants de Terra Amata vivaient paisiblement dans cette contrée, il y a plus de 500.000 ans, nous disent les paléontologues.

She has drunk deep from the minds that sought her favours. Her avenues still enshroud the caprices, the secrets, the lingering perfumes of her erstwhile stars.
Strung out between the Mediterranean and steep hills, this proud, light-bathed city opens both its gates and its mysteries. Its personal tale began on a swamp below its castle, between the bend of the Ponchettes and the Paillon delta. The area around, however, this Terre Aimée, was the home of primitive folk in the very distant past some 500,000 years ago according to the palaeontologists.
