INTRODUZIONE

La ragione per cui mi è stato chiesto di scrivere una breve introduzione a questo bellissimo libro fotografico è che mi conosco come un'amante dell'America, sia dell'America "turistica" e naturale, sia dell'America storica e culturale. Ciò che sono da molti anni, e rimangono anche in questi tempi - dopo l'attentato dell'11 settembre - in cui sembra di doversi schierare o pro o contro Bush, dimenticando che l'America è molto più che la sua attuale amministrazione, e anche di più che l'Occidente contrapposto alle altre civiltà, le quali invece l'hanno penetrata e ne costituiscono la profonda ricchezza. Il rapporto - differenza, ma anche affinità e simpatia - che lega l'America all'Italia mi sembra si inquadri in questo generale sentimento: noi ci "ritroviamo" nell'America perchè essa è fatta anche di molto di noi, ma il nostro ritrovarci è anche uno spaesamento che ci fa capire meglio chi siamo, come quando collocati in una situazione molto diversa da quella che ci è abituale, scopriamo di possedere virtù, sensibilità o anche vizi, curiosità, capacità di cui non sospettavamo l'esistenza.

INTRODUCTION

The reason I was asked to write a brief introduction to this beautiful photography book is that I'm known as an America enthusiast, both of the tourist, natural side and its history and culture. I have been so for years and willremain so even in these times - after the attack of 11 September - in which it seems sides must be taken for or against Bush, forgetting that America is much more than its current administration, and still more than Western opposition to other cultures, which, however, have penetrated and enriched it. The relationship - difference, but also similarity and sympathy - that ties America to Italy seems to fit into this general feeling that we rediscover ourselves in America because it is made of much of what we ourselves are; however, our rediscovery also means alienation which helpes us understand better who we are, such as when we find ourselves in situations very different from our usual routines, and we discover virtues, sensibilities, or even vices, curiosities and capacities we did not know we had.

Questo volume nasce dalla collaborazione tra due fotografi che, partendo dalla loro amicizia hanno deciso di costruire un progetto comune. Un fotografo italiano, Alberto Ramella, fotografa gli Stati Uniti d'America e un fotografo americano Jake Price, presta il suo sguardo a luoghi e paesaggi italiani.
A queste immagini si unisce il testo di Gianni Vattimo in cui si racconta l'America vista da un italiano che la conosce per lunga frequentazione e che ne ama scenari e cultura, scavando a fondo per scardinare quelli che sono i luoghi comuni dell'immaginario collettivo.
In queste pagine si incontrano e dialogano due culture, grazie all'attenzione di due fotografi d'eccezione.



This book emerges from the cooperation between two photographers that, based on their friendship, decided to embark on a project. An Italian photographer, Alberto Ramella, shoots the U.S. while the American photographer, Jake Price, casts his sight on italian places and landscapes.
To these images Gianni Vattimo adds the text where America is told as seen by an Italian who knows the country thanks to a long series of visits and wholoves its scenery and culture striving to overcome the stereotypes of our collective immagination.
Two cultures meet and dialogue in these pages, thanks to the attention of two fantastic photographers.
