I CENTO NOMI DEL MAGGIOLINO

Per la sua casa costruttrice il Maggiolino ha sempre avuto come nome solo un numero di progetto, diverso a seconda della versione. Ciononostante, in tutto il mondo lo si è sempre conosciuto con un soprannome che, il più delle volte, è la traduzione in lingua locale del nome di un coleottero (solitamente scarabeo, come in tedesco e inglese, o coccinella, come in italiano e francese), più raramente rana o tartaruga.
Il soprannome fu coniato dal quotidiano americano NewYork Times, che iniziava un articolo sul numero del 3 luglio 1938 parlando di "migliaia, migliaia e migliaia di splendenti piccoli maggiolini che presto popoleranno le autostrade tedesche...". L'inglese "beetle" fu tradotto letteralmente "Кafer" in tedesco e per il grande pubblico tale è rimasto per i sessant'anni successivi. La Volkswagen, però, lo adottò ufficialmente sui suoi stampati pubblicitari solo a partire dall'estate del 1967.

THE MANY BEETLE NAMES

For Volkswagen the Beetle has only ever been characterized by a project number, which differed according to the versions. Throughout the world on the other hand it has always been known by its nickname, which in most cases, is the literal translation of a coleopteron (usually a beetle, as in German and English, or a ladybird, as in French), and more rarely a frog or tortoise.
The nickname was coined by the US daily newspaper New York Times, which began an article in the July 3, 1938 edition by referring to "thousands and thousands of splendid little beetles that would soon populate the German motorways... ".
The English word "beetle" was translated as "Кдfer" in German and for the general public this name remained for the next sixty years. Volkswagen however only adopted it officially in its marketing materials in the summer of 1967.
