INTRODUZIONE

Da questo volume, che presenta una rassegna iconografica particolarmenta completa della tecnologia datata 1800, si potrebbe partire per una storia che diventerebbe presto infinita, ma, evidentemente, non è questa la sede per un'analisi della scienza e della tecnica del XIX secolo.
Ciascuna classe delle macchine qui raffigurate avrebbe meritato una breve storia evolutiva e un commento tecnico esplicativo, ma soprattutto una narrazione delle vicende umane dei loro inventori e perfezionatori: perchè questa è la vera lezione che i loro epigoni d'oggi dovrebbero apprendere. Inventori quasi mai togati ma sempre geniali, e quasi sempre avversati, denigrati o derubati delle loro creature, ma tutti invasati dallo stesso demone che portò pochi di loro alla fama, molti alla fame, alla follia (Sauvage) o al suicidio (Evans, Diesel).
Nel XIX secolo, il lavoro di ricerca in gruppo non era ancora stato concepito, perchè l'intero patrimonio culturale scientifico poteva essere ancora dominato da una sola mente di buona intelligenza, e questo spiega perchè i mestieri e le professioni di quelli che oggi ci appaiono come "tecnologi" fossero assai diversi dai loro specifici interessi: si pensi ad esempio a Gurney, il medico inglese che nel 1825 inventò la caldaia a piccoli tubi d'acqua, risorta dall'oblio alla fine del secolo come una sraordinaria novità. Ma si pensi anche a Elias Howe, l'americano che inventò la macchina da cucire moderna: dapprima truffato dal suo socio inglese, che brevettò l'invenzione come sua, quindi derubato dell'idea da Isaac M. Singer, cadde ogni volta in miseria, ma fu sempre tanto ostinato da far valere i propri diritti in tribunale, vincere la causa e finire i suoi giorni in meritata ricchezza: ma oggi è il nome dell'altro a essere comunque ricordato, e bene in vista. INTRODUCTION

This illustrated volume present a comprehensive selection of pioneering archivements of 19th century engineering. As a starting point, it directs the reader to embark on a longer journey into 19th century science and technology, the detailed exploration of which lied beyond the scope of this book. Each category of machines illustrated here merits its own short history to explain the development of the device and its practical application, along with an account retelling the human side of the events that led to its invention and later improvement. And it would be a real lesson today?s generation could greatly benefit from. Back than, inventors were often self-taught, rarely academic, always genial and continously vexed, scorned or robbed of their creations. Yet they were all possessed by an ossession which would variously bring fame, misfortune or madness (Sauvage) or suicide (Evans, Diesel) upon them.
Unlike current progress driven forward by teams of researchers, 19th century scientific enquiry was still very much the quest of a single fertile mind that had mastered the basic mechanical and engineering principles know at the time. For this reson, the trade and professions of the pioneers we see today as engineers were often no more than incidental to the particular interests they pursued. For example, the British physician and inventor Sir Goldsworthy Gurney invented the small tube boiler in 1825, which was to reapper as a marvelous novelty at the end of the century. Another example is Elias Howe, the young American machinist, whose stitching device was the forerunner of the modern sewing machine. Initially cheated by his British parter who secured the patent as his own idea, and than by Isaac M. Singer, another Boston machinist, he was left destitute and disillusioned. Despite bleak prospect for the future, he determinedly contested Singer's patent rights in courts battle, eventually won his cases, and lived own his final days in hard earned prosperity. Nonetheless, it is his adversary's name that is remembered and prominently displayed on each product. Unicuique suum?
