PREFAZIONE La 500 ha rappresentato il genio italiano nel mondo. Tutti coloro che hanno preso la patente fra gli anni Sessanta e Settanta hanno avuto almeno una 500 nella loro vita. Anch'io ne avrei voluto avere una appena ho preso la patente, ma mio papà era restio a farmi guidare un'auto al compimento dei diciotto anni. Così ho potuto guidare solo dopo la laurea. Ma mi sono rifatto. Ho posseduto una bicilindrica e ancora oggi amo girare per Roma a bordo della mia auto, una 500 F verde acqua del 1970 il cui primo proprietario era nientemeno che Gabriele D'Annunzio, nipote del Vate. Trovo che la 500 sia miracolosa, perchè puoi girare tranquillamente per la città senza il pensiero che qualcuno ti veda. È portentosa per gli incontri segreti... Che dire di più? Penso che la 500 sia un'auto ancora attuale, l'unica che non conosce il passare del tempo. La 500 è e rimarrà sempre nel cuore degli italiani, nella memoria, ma soprattutto nella vita quotidiana. Saluto con piacere questa nuova iniziativa editoriale, che contribuirà all'ulteriore diffusione di questo autentico mito. Renzo Arbore PREFACE The 500 has been a banner of Italian genius all over the world. Anyone who passed their driving test in the sixties or seventies has had at least one 500 in his/her life. As soon as I had my license, I wanted one too: yet my father wasn't that keen on letting me on the road at the tender age of eighteen, so driving had to wait until after graduation. But I soon made up for lost time: I immediately bought my very own twin-cylinder and even today I still love cruising around Rome at the wheel of my pale green 500 F, made in 1970 and previously owned by none other than Gabriele D'Annunzio, grandson of the famous same-named poet. To me, the 500 is miraculous, as it let's me get around town in perfect anonymity. It's marvellous for secret meetings... What more is there to say? I still see the 500 as a car for today and the only one immune to the passage of time. Italians adore the 500 and always will do, as it has provided them with efficient everyday transport and endless memories.
