Almost every week, news of a spectacular new building built from concrete is announced. Yet, reports of the manifold possibilities of this building material do not limit themselves to buildings. In the past years, manufacturers have increasingly promoted the development of new methods and products, which, in turn, have been used by architects, designers, civil engineers and artists. Concrete is currently used for a variety of highly sophisticated objects and buildings; indeed, many surfaces, structures and constructions now exist, despite having been previously deemed impossible build. 'This publication offcrs insight into the most important current developments in concrete architetture and the interaction of construction and architectural expression. Select examples demonstrate the unique potential of concrete, highlighting the most cutting-edge design trends as well as works ofbéton brut architecture. The examples, sorted according to architects and designers, present multiple perspectives. In this way, the malleable potential of this essentially shapeless material, the variety of architectural possibilities, and the influente of the digital world on the development and production of concrete are exhibited. In diesem Band zeigt sich eindrucksvoll, wie wichtig die Anordnung oder das Gefuge eines Materials wie Beton ist. Dies wird besonders deutlich, wenn man bedenkt, dass ein und dasselbe Materia' durch eine veranderte Struktur eine vo;i1- lig andere Anmutung erhàlt. Neben der visuellen Wahrnehmung ist dabei die Haptik eine unmittelbar spiirbare Komponente. EINLEITUNGBeton ist seit der Rómerzeit das Baumaterial fiir ambitionierte Architekten. Frei formbar, haltbar und stabil erweist sich der „fiússige Stein" als ideales Gestaltungsmittel. Kaum ein anderes Matcrial ist so facettenreich und vielfàltig. Es vergeht keine Woche, in welcher nicht der Bau eines neuen, spektakulàren Bauwerkes aus Beton verOffentlicht wird. Doch die Berichterstattungen iibcr die Miiglichkeiten des Baustoffs machen nicht am Rande der Baugrube halt. Seitens der Hersteller ist in den letzten Jahren versCirkt die Entwicklung neuer Produkte und Verfahren vorangetrieben worden, die Architekten, Designer, Bauingenieure und Kiinstler in ihren Arbeiten genutzt haben. Mittlerweile gibt es eine ganze Reihe von gelungenen Bauwerken und Objekten aus diesem Werkstoff. In der Tat sind heute Gebaudekonstruktionen, OberIkichen und Strukturen rnéèglich, die lange Zeit als nicht realisierbar galten. Die Puhlikation bietet Einblick in wichtige aktuelle Entwicklungen der Beton-Architektur und in die Interaktion von Konstruktion und architektonischem Ausdruck. Anhand von ausgesuchten Fleispielen wird das spezifische Potenziai des Werkstoffs Beton aufgespfirt, wohei neben neuesten Designtendenzen Werke des „béton brut" der Betonarchitektur einen Schwerpunkt bilden. Die Beispiele sind nach Architekten und Designern sortiert und aus unterschiedlichen Blickwinkeln dargestcllt. So wird das plastische Potenziai des an sich formlosen Materials aufgezcigt, es werden die architektonischen Móglichkeiten erórtert und dargestcllt wie sich die digitale Welt auf die Entwicklung und Produktion auswirkt.
