 In contrast to many countries modeled according to the Western traditions, the Arabian culture is closely tied to religious and social values. The current discussion regarding contemporary architecture broaches the subject of the importance of tradition and deals with the Arabian identity. The architects have various viewpoints on the subject: Besides those who represent an international and global architectural language, there are also numerous planners that incorporate historical elements such as arches, domes, and columns into their designs and interpret them in a contemporary fashion. The results prove that tradition and modernity do not have to be mutually exclusive but can coexist together and complement each other.Parallel to the social upheaval, there are also urban structures in dynamic change in the Arabian metropolises. In some areas, there is a genuine building boom that sometimes takes place in an unstructured manner. Clear positioning is sought after for every new project. Visionary future ideas that convey new approaches find approval as well as the designs with a traditional approach. The location also has a strong influence on the design in the Arabian region. Through the intentional alignment of the building using traditional knowledge regarding the interaction of sun and wind, the architects create a pleasant atmosphere in the building and take into consideration the extreme climatic conditions. The inner courtyard is not only an element of design but also provides a well-balanced climate in the building. The circulation of the air and the indirect lighting naturally counteract the heat development in the rooms. The facades of the houses appear to be closed and protect the intimate, introverted flair that distinguishes the Arabian house. Windows and doors only allow certain direct light in and an interplay of openness and closeness as well as of light and shadow is the result. With an unobstructed view, the buildings open themselves up and offer a view into the wide landscape. In the contemporary Arabian architecture, there are also constructively well-engineered facades in addition to bricks and raw stucco surfaces. The technical development of the respective region influences both the choice and use of building materials. The architects show the variety of formal possibilities and an experimental handling of the selection of materials. Despite these various standards, the architectural language is modern and contemporary. Many Arabian architects studied abroad or teach there and bring their experiences back to their homelands. Clients appear to be open to new ideas. A new way of thinking is taking place in the society that expresses itself in the architecture as well. „Arabian Design" presents the projects of renowned offices and young architects and shows the exciting process, in which a new, modern presence is developing out of tradition and ideas for the future are resulting. |
INTRODUZIONE A differenza di molti paesi occidentali la cultura araba è fortemente legata ai valori religiosi e sociali. L'attuale discussione sull'architettura contemporanea è centrata sul significato della traduzione e sul ruolo dell'identità araba. Gli architetti sostengono al proposito diversi punti di vista: accanto a quelli che sostengono un linguaggio architettonico internazionale e globale, si trovano numerosi esponenti che integrano nei propri progetti elementi storici come archi, cupole e colonne interpretandoli in maniera attuale. I risultati mostrano che tradizione e modernità non sono in contraddizione, ma sussistono una accanto all'altra integrandosi perfettamente. Parallelamente ai capovolgimenti sociali, le strutture cittadine delle metropoli arabe sono interessate da grandi trasformazioni dinamiche. In alcune zone si assiste ad un vero e proprio boom edilizio che a volte assume caratteri poco precisi. Per ogni nuovo progetto viene pertanto richiesta una precisa collocazione. Le idee futuristiche che trasmettono nuovi stimoli e modi di pensare incontrano un certo consenso come pure i progetti con carattere più tradizionale. Il luogo influenza in maniera significativa il progetto nel mondo arabo. Attraverso l'orientamento mirato dell'edificio gli architetti creano sulla base del gioco di sole e vento ambienti dall'atmosfera piacevole, anche in presenza di condizioni climatiche estreme. Cosi il cortile interno non rappresenta solamente un elemento di stile, ma contribuisce a garantire un ambiente piacevole nell'edificio. La circolazione dell'aria e la luce indiretta ostacolano in maniera tutta naturale lo sviluppo di calore nei diversi ambienti. Le facciate appaiono piuttosto chiuse a protezione del flair intimo ed introverso che caratterizza la casa araba. Le finestre e le porte fanno penetrare solo in maniera mirata la luce diretta, creando un gioco tra aperture e chiusure, cosi come con luce e ombra. Allo sguardo libero gli edifici si aprono offrendo una vista sul paesaggio. Nell'architettura araba contemporanea ritroviamo accanto a mattoni e superfici intonacate grezze anche facciate costruttivamente più complesse. Lo sviluppo tecnico della regione influenza la scelta e l'impiego dei materiali da costruzione. Gli architetti mostrano la versatilità delle possibilità formali ed un atteggiamento sperimentale nella scelta dei materiali. Il linguaggio architettonico è moderno e contemporaneo nonostante i diversi standard. Molti architetti arabi hanno studiato all'estero e riportano in patria le esperienze fatte. I committenti si mostrano aperti ad accogliere il nuovo. Nella società è in essere una trasformazione che si riflette anche nell'architettura. "Arabian Design" presenta i progetti di studi famosi come pure di giovani architetti e illustra il processo con cui partendo dalla traduzione si ha lo sviluppo di un presente moderno e di idee rivolte al futuro. |
